Dog Training Books to Read
Having failed once to successfully train a new German Shorthair pup, I knew I needed to do a lot more research before I tried again. As I begin any research project I started online. I spent many hours lurking in the hunting forums and numerous dog training websites and even phone calls to reputable kennels. From all this research I compiled a list of six books that were recommended as required reading. I am sure there are many more great books out there, but this is my starting point.
Six Dog Trainng Books To Get Me Started
1- Wing & Shot
by Robert G Wehle
2- Training Pointing Dogs
by Paul Long
3- Tarrant Trains Gun Dogs
by Bill Tarrant
4- The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog
by Sigbot Winterhelt and Edward D. Bailey (NAVHDA)
5- Best Way To Train Your Gun Dog "Delmar Smith Method"
by Bill Tarrant
6- Speed Train Your Own Bird Dog
by Larry Mueller
Most of these books were easily found and ordered online at Gun Dog Supply. Some are even listed for sale on mainstream online book retailers like Amazon.com
As I wade through these books I intend to review each title in detail and offer my opinion on its value to the amateur dog trainer.
Comments
I recently purchased a german shorthair pup, having hunted with the breed on several occasions, I thought having my own would be great to hunt alone. I am seeking out any helpful info. on correct training. She is 9 wks old and potty training is going very well. She goes on point already, so obviously she already knows more than I do.
Thanks for any imput.
