Male or Female?

One decision that every potential dog owner must face is that of gender. One can make a valid argument either way. I have come to the conclusion that it is mostly a matter of personal preference for the dog owner. Some would argue that a female dog is more calm and trainable because of the nurturing instinct that the title mother brings. Others would say that males generally have more spirit and natural drive. But, the question that must first be asked is what are you looking for in a dog.

Having parted ways with a high spirited female German Shorthair, I know what it means to have a dog with a lot of drive. A dog that wanted to get out and hunt more than I did wasn't the right match for me and my situation. This time around I am looking for the calmest puppy in the litter. The puppy that will be the model citizen in my family setting. A dog that will be more forgiving of the rookie mistakes that I will most certainly make as dog trainer. A dog that will lie still while my 18 month old baby pulls on its tail.

Hunting will play second fiddle at our house. First and foremost we are looking for a friend and a member of the family. A dog that will play with the children in the backyard. A dog that will go hiking and biking with us. There will be hunting in the fall, and plenty of birds to chase in the off season. With a home surrounded by corn and alfalfa fields and a world class pheasant and chukar hatchery for a neighbor there will most certainly be opportunities to learn about birds.
