I just found your blog. I grew up in Salina, Ut and hunted pheasant with an American Britt. This was 40 years ago when pheasants and open land to hunt on were both plentiful there. I remember getting a limit of 5 roosters my first hunt at 14 yrs old and it took over 30 shots with an old single shot .410. WIsh there was that much to shoot at now.
Anyway, I now live in Reno NV and took up chukar hunting 4 seasons ago. I started with my new pup, 6 months old at the time, a French Brittany. Am now hooked beyond belief, on both the chucks and the dog. I hunt in Northern Humboldt county in some of Americas best chuckar country and got to say I'll be doing it as long as these legs will carry me.
I too wish I had a training buddy. If I were closer, I would sure look you up and offer my labor services for internship. I have been training as best I can, but so far I would have to say that my dog's natural instincts have been teaching me. She is an awesome natural hunter with points, finds, backs, and hunt close, always checking in with me. She is also a member of the family. She doesn't like to retrieve, and is now 4 years old, but I will try your retrieve idea with the lead and gentle come commands.
Meanwhile, I have marked your blog in my favorites, and will check in. I come back to Salina each CHristmas vacation to visit family and hunt Honkers in the Glenwood area. Maybe I'll get a chance to drop in and meet you in person.
Best of luck in both hunting and training . Jared

Just want to say, that I enjoy your website. I am getting a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon pup in sixth months and this will be my first gun dog. You have great articles and awesome pictures. I wish you the best, I will continue to read what is on your site. If you could include any tips you have for the "Whoa" command, or how to prep quail, pheasant, or pidgeons for training that would be most appreciated. You have awesome dogs.

Ran across your blog a few weeks ago and posted a link on mine. I am in Grand Junction, Colorado, 20 miles from the Utah line. If your ever in the area give me a shout, I have some decent training grounds close to the ranch here. Would love to get more of your insight on hatching and raising quail. By the way, we are supposed to pick up a Dave Walker Brittany in March..
