I am an avid duck and pheasant hunter. I have always been a lab guy and currently have a 5 yr old yellow lab that is an accomplished waterfowl dog and is coming into his own as an upland dog. I have hunted with friends that own brittanies, english pointers and gsp's. I would like to get a pointer to complement my lab for upland hunting. I want a strong pointer that will also retrieve. I don't want a dog that is real far ranging. The dog will also be a family companion and socialization is just as important as hunting for me. My top choices are english setter, english pointer, and brittany. I would value you opinion or recommendation on these breeds or others. She has never been and I don't know how to train a hunting dog. I would like to know your rates for training and also if there's still hope for her even though she is already so old to start?
